South Russell, Ohio
South Russell is a village located in Geauga County, OH. As of the 2010 Census, the population of South Russell was 3,819. The village takes up a total of 3.83 square miles, 3.75 square miles of which is land and 0.08 square miles is water.
South Russell, located south of Gates Mills, east of Solon, and Chagrin Falls, North of Twinsburg and Aurora, has a full history that reads similarly to many other surrounding Ohio townships. In 1818, Gideon Russell and his family moved from their home on the East Coast to the thick woods of township number seven of the Connecticut Western Reserve. For the next two years, the Russell family were the only ones living in the area, which was referred to as the West Woods. Population growth in the area was very slow. General farming was the main occupation of nearly all the early settlers in the area. The Union Cheese Factory was built in 1871, becoming the first industry to settle there.

The Cleveland and Eastern Electric Railway brought many new changes to the rural landscape of South Russell in the 1890s. South Russell laid on and between two lines going east from Cleveland. South Russell Village was not incorporated until 1923, making it the last village in Geauga County to do so. The city saw little substantial growth until the interurban came along after World War I and roads were improved. As automobiles become more common, the scattered farmhouses gave way to new residential developments, most of which were around the many lakes of the area, with Paw Paw Lake leading the way. The majority of the growth in the area came during a period after 1970.
Today, South Russell is a lovely area that’s almost completely residential, with just a few small areas that are zoned for light business. Area zoning is strict, but village services are outstanding and are one of the many reasons why residents enjoy living there. Residents have a strong attachment to their village and support its policies and traditions wholeheartedly.
