Gates Mills is just a short, 24-mile drive to the city of Cleveland.

The town was founded in 1826 by Holsey Gates when he bought 130 acres of Chagrin River Land from the Connecticut Land Company so that he could have a good water supply for a sawmill. The area proved to be an excellent location for mills thanks to the abundant water supply, which led to the construction of several more mills, hence the name of the town.
The area experienced rapid growth thanks to the sawmills. By 1850, the town was a thriving community that exported many manufactured products. At this time there was a mail service, a school, a tavern, and several organized social and religious organizations.
Gates Mills enjoyed this prosperity until after the Civil War when water-powered mills began to languish. Unfortunately, this led to a temporary decline in the city’s vitality. In the 1890s there were several professional Cleveland men that established Gates Mills as their “country retreat.” During this time, these men backed the Maple Leaf Land Company, which promoted the village of Gates Mills as well as the Cleveland & Eastern interurban railway, which connected Gates Mills to Cleveland in 1899.

In 1905, the Gates Mills Improvement Society was formed. This society was primarily made up of the landowners who shaped the strong, prosperous culture and community that the town still enjoys to this day. In 1930 a Village Hall was constructed to house the police, fire, and other community departments.
Today, there has been little changed to the residential character of Gates Mills. It’s primarily a residential community. After the close of the mills, there hasn’t been any new industry to join the area. That said, it’s a wonderful place to live and visit. There are plenty of things to do, especially if enjoying nature’s beauty and American history is high on your priority list.
If you’re planning a visit to the area, the Wilson Mills Trail Head is a must-see. It’s one of the most beautiful parks in the country and is the perfect summertime destination to enjoy walking, biking, horseback riding, fishing, kayaking, and more.
