Aurora, Ohio
Aurora OH is a suburb of the Greater Cleveland area, located on the eastern portion of the city. The population as of the 2010 census was 15,548. There’s some disagreement on where the name of the city was derived from, with some believing it was named after the daughter of Major Amos Spafford and others believing the name came from Aurora, the Roman goddess of dawn.
The city covers a total area of 24.07 square miles, of which 22.92 are land and 1.15 is water. It’s bordered by the following cities and suburbs; Hudson, Solon, Bainbridge Township, Streetsboro, Twinsburg, and Auburn Township. Communities like South Russell and Gates Mills are to the North. Aurora was named a “Tree City USA” by the National Arbor Day Foundation for its excellence in urban forestry.

Aurora is located in what was a remote region of the Western Reserve. The first family to make their way to the region was the family of Ebenezer Sheldon in 1799. Sheldon and his family relocated to the area from Westfield, Connecticut to come live on the Connecticut Reserve. Soon after, more pioneer families made their way from the Northeast over to the area, leaving the comforts of their lives back East to forge a new way in Ohio. By 1807, the settlement had grown enough that it was named a village.
The area continued to grow and prosper as a township until 1928 when a central portion of Aurora was incorporated into Aurora village or Aurora Station. Geographically, the town was politically divided between the village and township until the Aurora Township was annexed by the village in 1958. In 1971, Aurora was officially named a city.

Today, Aurora is a thriving city that’s enjoyed by families, working professionals and seniors alike. There’s plenty to do within the city limits and anything you can’t find you can easily travel the 20 or so miles to the larger cities of Akron or Cleveland. It has several private country clubs and it’s home to the historic Aurora Golf and Country Club with its championship course. Additionally, there are various recreational facilities at Giles Pond or Geauga Lake, located within the city.
The city used to be home to the second-ever location for the popular SeaWorld chain, however, that closed back in 2000. There are still plenty of things to do and see, including visiting one of the many beautiful public parks located on the shores of Aurora Lake. Thorn Creek Winery and Gardens is also a popular attraction for local folks and visitors alike. No matter what time of the year you visit the historic city of Aurora, you can plan on plenty of places to visit, eat, and enjoy with some of the best mother nature has to offer.
